Originally code-named '''Whistler''', Windows XP was released by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems on August 24, 2001. It received generally positive reviews, noting increased performance and overall stability, a more intuitive user interface, improved hardware support, and expanded multimedia capabilities. Up until August of 2012, when Windows 7 overtook it, Windows XP was the most widely used operating system in the world. Extended support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014, after which it ceased receiving further support or security updates.
